The Indiana Library Passport, a creative digital experience that encourages everyone to visit libraries across the Hoosier state, is open to Indiana residents and outside visitors alike. The passport has more than 170 libraries and branches to explore.

Genealogy for Night Owls returns to Indiana State Library on May 21 |
The Indiana State Library is once again hosting its popular Genealogy for Night Owls event on Thursday, May 21, from 5-8 p.m.
The after-hours research event at the State Library will feature a library tour, a presentation on unique items in the library's collections and Ask-an-Expert sessions with representatives from various local historical, genealogical and lineage organizations.
The schedule is as follows:
- 5:10 p.m. - Library tour
- 5:30 p.m. - Presentation - “Unique Items from the Library Collections”
- 5:45 p.m. - Ask-an-Expert sessionsbegin
- 7 p.m. - Ask-an-Expert sessions end
- 8 p.m. - Program conclusion
The tour and Ask-an-Expert sessions are optional. Attendees may spend the entire evening conducting their own research if they prefer. The Ask-an-Expert sessions are 15 minutes in length. Attendees should have questions prepared in advance. The library tour is roughly 20 minutes in length and will cover materials available for genealogy researchers at the Indiana State Library.
Genealogy Division librarians will be on hand to answer questions about the collection. They will also answer research and reference questions and assist in locating materials. The second floor microfilm area will be open and staffed by librarians from the Indiana Division. The Rare Books and Manuscripts and Reference Divisions will not be open during Genealogy for Night Owls. Librarians will not be able to retrieve manuscript collections during this event.

Indiana Poet Laureate to speak at Jackson County Public Library |
On Monday, April 27, from 5-6:30 p.m., the Jackson County Public Library will celebrate National Poetry Month with Indiana Poet Laureate Curtis L. Crisler.
A celebrated poet, author and professor at Purdue University Fort Wayne, Curtis writes with a vivid voice that explores community, history and the human experience.
The Indiana Poet Laureate makes appearances at schools and libraries, offers advice to the Indiana Arts Commission concerning ways to further the art of poetry in Indiana and represents Indiana and the art of poetry to the education community and the public.

Featured Indiana State Library kit: 'Chicks' |
The Indiana State Library’s Indiana Young Readers Center provides five types of kits for use by public library youth librarians and teachers across the state: Book Club kits, LEGO kits, DUPLO kits, Storytime kits and Indiana Escape Experience kits. Every other week, the Wednesday Word will feature one of these kits.
This week's featured kit is the "Chicks" storytime kit. The kit focuses on eggs, chicks and chickens and includes two nonfiction books, six fiction books, three board books and a professional development book on storytimes. It also features a set of 20 eggs that open to show each stage of chick development, a life cycle banner, a music CD by Laurie Berkner, a large mother hen puppet, a small plush chick toy and an egg-sorting toy that allows children to match colors and shapes with the egg. Every kit includes a teacher’s or librarian’s guide full of ideas for use with groups of children.
“Chicks are a perfect way to celebrate Easter and all of the spring season,” said Tammie Buchanan, Indiana Young Readers Center librarian at the Indiana State Library.

Indiana Limestone Company turns 100 |
One of Indiana’s most famous exports is undoubtedly its limestone. Found in abundance in south central Indiana, it has been used to construct many buildings throughout the world, including the Indiana Capitol and the Indiana State Library.
One of the largest limestone providers continues to be the Indiana Limestone Company. Originally located in Bedford, the company was officially incorporated on April 14, 1926. An image from the Indiana State Library’s digital collection shows large limestone columns being prepared for transport. The photo is taken from a multi-volume scrapbook set showcasing the quarrying, transportation and uses of Indiana limestone with many images attributed to the Indiana Limestone Company. |
| Registration now open for Government Information Day 2026 |
Registration is now open for Government Information Day 2026. The free one-day conference promotes federal, state and local government information and resources. The 2026 conference will be the seventh held at the Indiana State Library. It will take place on Friday, May 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
Sessions include "Intro to U.S. Government Info," "Providing Indiana Newspaper Collections and Using Them Efficiently," "Senior Services Roundtable,""New Facility and Records of the Indiana State Archives" and more.
Hugh Halpern, director of the U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO), has been announced as the Government Information Day 2026 keynote speaker. Halpern is responsible for overseeing the publishing and printing information for the three branches of the Federal Government. He is the 28th person to lead GPO since the agency was created by Congress on March 4, 1861.
"We are pleased to welcome Hugh Halpern to deliver this year’s keynote address. As GPO transitions to a digital Federal Depository Library Program, director Halpern brings his perspective on how libraries are adapting to the changes in ways that the public consumes information and the evolving role of librarians and libraries in today’s information ecosystem," said Jacob Speer, Indiana State Librarian.
Select sessions will be available online and all sessions are eligible for LEUs for Indiana library staff.
