| GPO appoints Brent Abercrombie of the Indiana State Library to Depository Library Council |
U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) director Hugh Nathanial Halpern has appointed six new members to the Depository Library Council (DLC), including Brent Abercrombie, regional coordinator and reference librarian at the Indiana State Library.
The DLC has advised the GPO director on policy matters relating to the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) and access to U.S. government information for more than 50 years. In addition to experience working in various types of libraries, the new DLC members have experience with, and knowledge of, current developments in library science and U.S. government information.
Abercrombie began his career at the Indiana State Library in 2008 as a manuscript librarian. He became regional coordinator in 2015. An active leader in the government documents community, Abercrombie serves as chair of the Midwest NCSA Steering Committee and chair of the Indiana Networking for Documents and Information of Government Organizations (INDIGO) association. He also chairs the planning committee for Indiana’s Government Information Day conference.
Abercrombie's term will begin on Monday, June 1, and end on Wednesday, May 31, 2028. |
Peabody Public Library unveils new logo ahead of anniversary celebration |
The Peabody Public Library has unveiled a new logo as part of its 125th anniversary celebration. Accompanying the refreshed design is a new tagline, “Where Our Community Grows.” Together, the logo and tagline reflect the library’s deep roots in Columbia City, while highlighting its continued growth as a welcoming place for discovery, creativity and connection.
Since opening its doors in 1901, the Peabody Public Library has served generations of families throughout Columbia City and Whitley County. The tree imagery within the new logo symbolizes knowledge, strength and growth.
The logo reveal kicks off a series of activities leading up to the official anniversary celebration. In the coming months, patrons can look forward to commemorative sticker giveaways, special programs and the revealing of new Peabody Public Library cards, featuring the winning designs from the "Library Card Design Contest."
The celebration will culminate in a community-wide anniversary party on Saturday, July 25, from 12-2 p.m. The event will feature family-friendly activities and opportunities for the community to celebrate 125 years of stories, service and shared experiences.
Community members are encouraged to follow the library on social media, sign up for the monthly calendar or visit in person for updates on anniversary events and festivities leading up to the celebration. |
Jefferson County Public Library to host Lori Rader-Day |
On Thursday, April 30, the Jefferson County Public Library will host Indiana Author Award-winner Lori Rader-Day at its Main Library in Madison. The event will take place from 6-8:30 p.m. in the library’s Madison Auditorium.
Rader-Day is an Indiana native and a crime and thriller author, who is currently on faculty at Northwestern’s School of Professional Writing in the Creative Writing Department. Her books have won the Mary Higgins Clark Award, the Agatha Award and three Anthony Awards.
Prior to her in-person appearance, the Hanover Book Group will discuss Rader-Day's “The Death of Us," a suspense novel, on Monday, March 30. The Hanover Book Group meets once per month at the Jefferson County Public Library's Hanover Branch.

World Water Day occurred on Sunday, March 22. Several federal and state resources provide researchers with reliable information about water sources and quality.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has a portal to water data for the nation on its website. The site also contains several pages that feature data,
maps, and data tools.
In Indiana, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Division of Water webpage hosts many resources, including information about water education with links for kids and
for adults. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) features a webpage devoted to
water quality with a section on ensuring that water is safe to drink. The Indiana Chamber produced a 2024 report, “Water Policy and Planning in Indiana: A 10-Year Update,” with water usage and resource maps of all 92 counties. Finally, Purdue’s
Indiana Water Resources Research Center provides a
series of upcoming and pre-recorded webinars for those who want to learn more about water research in the Hoosier state. |

Allen County Public Library recognized for 33rd consecutive 'Excellence in Financial Reporting' honor |
The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to the Allen County Public Library for its Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for the 2024 fiscal year. It marks the 33rd consecutive year that the library has achieved this prestigious recognition.
“Receiving the recognition for the 33rd consecutive year is a reflection of the ACPL’s deep and sustaining commitment to transparency,” said Jill Noll, the library's chief finance officer. “I am grateful to our board for providing oversight and I’m proud of the many staff members across the library who contribute to the accuracy and clarity of our reporting each year.”
The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.
