Lunch and Learn returns to Indiana State Library with 'The Business of Archives' |
The Indiana State Library's popular Lunch and Learn series will return next month with "The Business of Archives: Account Books in the Indiana State Library."
Some of the oldest manuscripts in the Indiana State Library are accounting books for regional business and trade, such as those in the Hyacinth Lasselle family collection. On Tuesday, March 10, from 12-1 p.m., Victoria Duncan, Rare Book and Manuscripts supervisor at the Indiana State Library, will introduce these collections, housed in the Rare Books and Manuscripts Division, while providing tips on how to navigate pre-20th century accounting.
The in-person portion of this hybrid event will take place in the Indiana State Library's History Reference Room. The virtual portion will take place via Zoom.

Roachdale-Franklin Township Public Library breaks ground on first-ever renovation |
On Wednesday, Jan. 21, the Roachdale-Franklin Township Public Library held a groundbreaking ceremony for its first-ever renovation. Board members, staff and representatives from Universal Design Associates, Inc. – the architect and managing partner along with Mattcon General Contractors, Inc. - gathered to celebrate the occasion.
The renovation, which began on Friday, Jan. 30, will include a one-story lower level addition and a two-story section incorporating an elevator and upper and lower-level ADA-compliant restrooms. The renovation will allow the library and staff to better serve the community.
For more than two decades, the library board had discussed ways to make the building more accessible, including the possibility of adding a lift or elevator and adding a much-needed downstairs restroom. After program expansions and community growth brought more patrons into the building, in 2019, the library board and library director Jennifer Stranger began the process of ushering the library into the 21st century.
"It was important to all to find an architect that would respect the Carnegie Library design, while providing the accessibility needed," the library said in a statement.
The library is hoping for a grand reopening celebration at the Roachdale Rib and Blues Fest in late September. Patrons are encouraged to visit the library's website for the latest renovation information, including potential closures. |
Explore the universe with NASA at the North Webster Community Public Library |
The North Webster Community Public Library is inviting teens and adults to take part in “Do NASA Science LIVE!” The hourlong livestream event will take place in the library on Wednesday, Feb. 11, from 6-7:30 p.m. Participants will have the unique opportunity to work alongside real NASA scientists as they explore the mysteries of the universe.
The interactive program will introduce attendees to the scientists behind Dark Energy Explorers, a NASA citizen science project focused on identifying distant galaxies and black holes. By participating, community members will help scientists build the largest map of the universe ever created.
No prior experience or specialized knowledge is required, making this an accessible and engaging introduction to citizen science. The program is best suited for ages 13 and older. For more information, please contact the library at 574-834-7122 or click here to register. |

While the northern half of Indiana gets plenty of snow, it is also quite flat so one would not expect to find a skiing resort there. However, from 1961 to 1987, Hoosiers itching to slide down snowy inclines could partake in the sport at Mount Wawasee outside of Syracuse in Kosciusko County.
Featuring seven different slopes, a Swiss-style ski chalet, an equipment store and lighted trails to allow for "romantic" nighttime skiing, Mount Wawasee was certainly a novelty in the area and catered mainly to new and casual skiers.

'Amazing Caves' scheduled as second 'Unearth a Story' webinar |
On Tuesday, March 3, from 10:30-11:30 a.m., the Indiana State Library will host a second 2026 "Unearth a Story" themed webinar to coincide with the Collaborative Summer Library Program's (CSLP) summer reading theme.
In "Unearth a Story: Indiana's Amazing Caves," Carla Striegel-Winner will explain how Indiana’s cave systems were formed and what might be found in them, including blind fish and Ice Age mammal bones. She will also share the basic knowledge needed to run a library program about caves for patrons of any age.
Striegel-Winner has served on the executive board of the all-volunteer nonprofit Indiana Karst Conservancy since 2010. She is also a member of the Indiana Cave Survey, the National Speleological Society and the Evansville Metro Grotto caving club.
